Building Mental Math Speed — Techniques That Actually Transfer

Why Mental Math Speed Matters in BEDMAS

On a 60-second turn timer, the bottleneck is almost never strategic thinking — it is arithmetic verification. Players who can instantly confirm that 7 × 8 = 56 or that 144 ÷ 12 = 12 have far more time left over to consider strategic placement. Players who need 10 seconds for each arithmetic check will consistently run out of time before finding the best move.

Five Techniques That Work

  • Multiplication table drilling: Times tables up to 12 should be instant recall — zero hesitation. Beyond 12, use the doubling strategy: 13 × 7 = (12 × 7) + 7 = 84 + 7 = 91.
  • Left-to-right calculation: Instead of column arithmetic, calculate from the largest digits first. 47 + 36 becomes 40 + 30 = 70, then 7 + 6 = 13, total 83. This method is faster for mental arithmetic than the right-to-left column method taught in school.
  • Rounding and adjusting: Turn difficult problems into easy ones by rounding, then adjusting. 99 × 4 is much easier as 100 × 4 − 4 = 396. 198 + 47 becomes 200 + 47 − 2 = 245.
  • Pattern memorisation: Learn the perfect squares up to 20² by heart. Know that 25 × 4 = 100, 125 × 8 = 1000. These patterns appear constantly in BEDMAS equations and recognising them instantly saves critical seconds.
  • Spaced repetition: Five 10-minute practice sessions across a week produce better retention than a single 50-minute session. Short, frequent practice is how speed is built — not marathon study sessions.

How BEDMAS Accelerates All of These

BEDMAS provides exactly the environment where all five techniques are trained simultaneously: time pressure forces speed, valid equation requirements enforce accuracy, and the variety of possible equations means you encounter multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction in unpredictable combinations that cannot be memorised — they must be calculated. After 20 to 30 hours of play, most players report a noticeable improvement in mental arithmetic speed that extends well beyond the game itself.
